Colorado Springs Electrician License: Classes and Exam
Colorado Springs and El Paso County share one building department, and it does not test electricians. It registers them, immediately, with an insurance certificate and a $50 fee. Both training programs in town publish their entry requirements in full.

The license is the state's
The individual license comes from the State Electrical Board under C.R.S. 12-115-109(1), and Colorado Springs does not issue one of its own.
The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department serves the City of Colorado Springs and El Paso County. Its licensing FAQ says State of Colorado licensees must register with the Department immediately, naming electrical alongside plumbing, elevators and escalators, and manufactured building installers.
Its ICC examination list covers building, residential, roofing, mechanical, gas pipe fitting and refrigeration. Electrical is not on it. The department's own ICC notice explains part of why, stating that Colorado does NOT have a state license for the building or mechanical trades, which is the reason those trades get local exams and electrical gets a registration instead.
What PPRBD asks for
From the electrical contractor registration form itself.
Attach the Colorado Master Electrician License, with electronic wallet cards for both the individual and the business accepted as sufficient. Attach a liability insurance certificate. Attach a workers' compensation certificate. And a non-refundable $50 application and processing fee is due at the time the application is submitted.
The insurance minimum on the department's FAQ is general liability at $1,000,000 each occurrence and $2,000,000 general aggregate. The policy must carry an endorsement requiring the carrier to notify the Building Department at least 10 calendar days before any reduction or cancellation, the certificate must name Pikes Peak Regional Building Department as certificate holder, and the business name must match Colorado Secretary of State records exactly.
The form does not state a renewal period, so ask the department rather than assuming an annual cycle.
The joint IBEW and NECA center

The programs it names are Journey-Level Worker Lineman, Journey-Level Worker Inside Wireman, Telecommunication VDV Installer-Technician, Journeyman Upgrade, and OSHA 10/30 with First Aid, CPR and NFPA-70E. The curriculum topics it names include AC and DC theory, motor controls, fire alarm systems, pipe bending, low volt VDV, National Electric Code, building automation and photovoltaics.
Published minimum qualifications, quoted: must be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of selection and indenture; must be a high school graduate or have a GED; must have completed one full year of high school algebra course with a passing grade; must have a qualifying score on the electrical training Alliance aptitude tests.
Documents required are a signed physical ability statement, proof of age, a high school diploma or GED, high school transcripts, a valid Colorado driver's license, a Social Security card, and a DD-214 for veterans. Applications are taken online between January 1st and June 30th. As we read the page on 7 September 2026 the window showed as currently closed until January 1st, 2027. Program length, on the job hours and classroom hours are not published on the pages we read.
IEC Southern Colorado, which publishes its numbers

Its entry requirement, quoted: a high school diploma or GED equivalent is the entry-level education required to be an electrical apprentice. Applicants also pass a Math Diagnostic Assessment or complete a Math Refresher course, and must be physically capable of performing the required tasks.
Its program structure, quoted: four years of apprentice experience, 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, and at least 288 hours of classroom training, with the chapter providing 576 hours of classroom training and instruction hours.
Classes are held in the evenings from 5:30 to 9:30pm once a week, over two semesters running August to December and January to May or June, with a winter rotation for first year students only. Registration is on a walk-in basis, 10a to 3p Monday through Thursday and Friday by appointment.
Tuition depends on the membership status of your employer and no figures are published. The chapter also lists a 10-Month FastTrack Program and a Pre-Apprenticeship Course, and we did not fetch either of those pages.
Pikes Peak State College
Pikes Peak State College, 5675 S. Academy Blvd., Colorado Springs, CO 80906.
Credential names as printed: an Associate of Applied Science degree in Building and Construction Technology with an emphasis in electrical, with total credit hours for the electrical degree at 70; an Electrical Fundamentals Certificate at 21 credit hours; and an Electrical Advanced Applications Certificate at 22 credit hours.
The page names National Center for Construction Education and Research certification and National Electrical Code coursework. It does not publish entry requirements, and it does not claim credit toward the Board's 288 hours or toward licensure hours. Do not assume either without asking the college.
The outside line route
IBEW Local 113 points lineman applicants somewhere else entirely: Mountain States Line Constructors Apprenticeship and Training, at a Colorado Training Center at 19565 County Road 2, Brighton, CO 80603, (801) 562-2929.
That is a two hour drive north of Colorado Springs, and it is a different trade with a different training path from inside wireman work.
Worth knowing before you apply to the wrong program, because both routes are named on the same local's page.
The test center
PSI's bulletin lists Colorado Springs at 5050 Edison Avenue, #122, Colorado Springs, CO 80915.
That is one of ten Colorado sites, and the nearest alternative is a long way off, with Pueblo to the south and the Denver area sites to the north.
The paper is 90 scored items in 240 minutes with 63 correct to pass, $78 to sit and $73 to retest. PSI supplies the code book and the formula page and you may not mark either. The book rules page covers what to practice instead.
