Fort Collins Electrician License: Classes and Exam

Fort Collins is one of the few Colorado cities that publishes a fee table for contractor licensing, and it is also one where the electrician line is missing from that table. The training here publishes tuition figures that the other Colorado programs in our sources do not print.

What Fort Collins asks a master electrician to do

The city licenses general and specialty contractors and registers master electricians. From its contractor licensing page:

Master Electricians and Plumbers must be listed on permits for their trade. They must be licensed by the State of Colorado with the relationship of Supervisor.

The registration steps, quoted in order: complete the Master License Registration packet; provide a copy of your Colorado State license; provide an insurance certificate; pay the registration fee.

On an earlier fetch of the same page, the city stated that master electricians must register with the City to work in Fort Collins and that no city exam is required. So the local layer here is paperwork, not a test.

The fee the city does not print

The published fee table, row by row as printed: new or reinstatement of license and supervisor's certificate $300; license and supervisor's certificate renewal $225; Master Plumber, new, renewal or reinstatement, $200; Exempt Registration, new, renewal or reinstatement, $200; Right-of-Way, new, renewal or reinstatement, $130.

There is a Master Plumber line and no Master Electrician line, while the registration steps on the same page tell a master electrician to pay the registration fee.

So the exact amount a Fort Collins master electrician pays is unconfirmed. Do not assume it is the $200 on the plumber row. Call the city and ask, because that is a five minute call that saves a wrong cheque.

Insurance, and a scope line worth reading

General liability insurance is required for all licenses and registrations. The minimum is $1,000,000 general aggregate for a Right-of-Way Contractor License and $2,000,000 general aggregate for all other license types, and the City of Fort Collins must be listed as certificate holder.

Several of the city's specialty license scopes stop at 50 volts and exclude electrical work outright. The sign license, for example, covers installing and erecting permanent signs requiring a sign permit, excluding electrical work.

That matters if you were planning to sign an electrical sign job under a sign license. In Fort Collins the scope says no.

IEC Rocky Mountain, Fort Collins campus

IEC Rocky Mountain has a Fort Collins campus at 912 Smithfield Drive #1 and 2, Fort Collins CO 80524. Its main chapter address is 11429 Pearl St., Northglenn, CO 80233, and the chapter says it serves more than 3,500 electrical apprentices and licensed electricians annually.

Program detail, quoted: to become a journeyman an apprentice needs a combination of 4 years of apprentice experience, 8,000 on-the-job training hours, and at least 288 hours of classroom training. Classes meet once a week and start at 5:30pm, with evening sessions running 5:30pm to 9:30pm.

The chapter says its program is recognized by the State Apprenticeship Agency, Apprenticeship Colorado, and by the US Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship.

The tuition figures, with their caveat

IEC Rocky Mountain is the only Colorado electrical program in our sources that publishes tuition, so these are worth recording.

Early registration: members $600 to $650, non-members $900 to $950. Regular registration: members $650 to $700, non-members $950 to $1000.

The published figures carry asterisks whose footnotes we did not read, so treat the ranges as indicative rather than final. The chapter adds that books are not included in the cost of tuition, with a book cost range of $450 to $650 per year.

Compare that with IEC Southern Colorado, which publishes no tuition figure at all and says the amount depends on the membership status of your employer.

Front Range Community College, and what is unconfirmed

The college's apprenticeship page says it has trained over 600 apprentices in 23 occupations and describes apprenticeships in healthcare, manufacturing, IT and tree care. No electrical apprenticeship is named on that page.

Its A to Z program finder returned only navigation when we fetched it on 7 September 2026, so we can neither confirm nor rule out an FRCC credit electrical program. The college also markets an online non-credit Residential Electrician career training course, which we did not fetch.

Until somebody reads those pages, do not name FRCC as an electrician training route and do not assume any of its courses satisfies the Board's 288 hour requirement.

We also found no IBEW or NECA training center with a Fort Collins address.

The test center

PSI's bulletin lists Fort Collins at 3000 S. College Ave, Suite 206, Fort Collins, CO 80525.

That is one of ten Colorado sites and the only one in northern Colorado, so it serves a wide area. Book early rather than assuming space.

The paper is 90 scored items in 240 minutes with 63 correct to pass, at $78. PSI supplies the code book and the formula page, and you may not write on, highlight, underline or index them.
