Colorado Journeyman Electrician Exam: Format and Fee

The Colorado journeyman paper is one of four PSI runs for the State Electrical Board, and all four have the same shape. Here is the format, the fee, the room rules and the parts of it nobody publishes.

The format

PSI's bulletin lists it as Journeyman Wireman: 90 Scored Items, 240 Minutes, 70% (63 Items) Correct to Pass.

On top of the 90 scored items there are up to 10 non-scored items with 30 extra minutes, so the scored window is four hours and the total seat time is four hours and thirty minutes.

Two minutes forty seconds per scored question is the working figure. That is comfortable for a rule you know where to find and impossible for one you have to hunt.

The fee

Examination Fee $78. Retest Fee $73.

PSI prints, in capitals, that examination fees are not refundable or transferable and that the examination fee is valid for one year from the date of payment.

So the fee expires. If you pay and then delay past twelve months, that money is gone, which is worth knowing before you pay early to lock in a date you are not ready for.

The book on the desk

Since August 1, 2026, all examination questions are consistent with the 2026 National Electrical Code book, and PSI provides that book and a formula page at the test center.

You may not write, highlight, underline, and/or index on the references, and you may not use any other materials. There is nothing to bring, and nothing to tab.

The 2023 code book can be provided on request until November 1, 2026, after which the bulletin says it is no longer offered. The deadline page works through whether that helps you, and the book rules page covers what to practice instead of tabbing.

Where the exam sits in the process

Before the application, not after. The Board's journeyman application preview asks you to have achieved a passing score on the Colorado Journeyman Electrician examination administered by PSI Testing.

So the order is hours, class, exam, then application. If you sit early and pass, the result waits for you. If you file first, the Board's own preview tells you not to.

How PSI establishes your eligibility to book is not described on any page we read, so ask PSI when you schedule. The journeyman license page has the requirements behind the application.

What you get back

A pass or a fail, and nothing else. Board rule 3 CCR 710-1.8.C says examination results will be provided in writing to each examinee in a pass or fail format, and that results will not be given in any other manner.

Rule 1.8.D says examinations shall not be subject to review by candidates, and rule 1.8.B says the content and answers are proprietary property, with discipline available against a licensee or registrant who discloses examination content.

The practical effect is that a failed attempt gives you no diagnosis. You cannot plan a retake around your weak areas, because you will not be told what they were. Build that diagnosis before the exam instead, with the free diagnostic.

What nobody publishes

There is no content outline for the Colorado papers on any Board, DORA or PSI page we read. No subject list, no weighting.

There is no pass rate for any Colorado electrician exam, from any of the three, and no annual exam volume. The Colorado Office of Policy, Research and Regulatory Reform lists no sunset review of the State Electrical Board that might carry one.

So when a site tells you the pass rate is some number, ask where it came from. We build our difficulty statements from the published pass mark of 63 correct out of 90 and the room rules, and nothing else. The exam content page explains the approach.

The other three papers

PSI runs four Colorado examinations and each one carries the same 90 items, 240 minutes and 63 to pass.

Master Electrician, for the license that adds planning, layout and supervision. Residential Wireman, for the dwelling license. And CO Journeyman Wireman (6 plus Year Apprentice Exam), which exists because the statute makes long registered apprentices sit the journeyman paper on a cycle.

There is no electrical contractor examination and no apprentice examination in Colorado.

How many questions is the Colorado journeyman exam?

What is the passing score?

70 percent, which PSI prints as 63 items correct out of the 90 scored items. The same mark applies to all four Colorado papers.

What does the Colorado journeyman exam cost?

Do I bring my own code book?
