Which Colorado Electrician License Are You On?

Get your hours record before you leave an employer.

Your employer keeps the record of your hours split residential against commercial or industrial, and rule 1.6.C makes them hand it over when you leave or when you ask for it. Ask while you still work there. The license application later wants exact employment dates, a breakdown by work type and supervisor signatures, and chasing that from a company that has changed hands is how good hours get lost.

A commercial job site makes you an apprentice again.

A licensed residential wireman working commercial has to be registered as an electrical apprentice and supervised by a journeyman or master electrician. Your employer files that registration all over again. It isn't a technicality either, because this is how most people earn the 2,000 commercial hours the journeyman license asks for later.

The exam comes before the application, not after.

Colorado's order is hours, then class, then exam, then paperwork. The Board's own journeyman preview asks you to have achieved a passing score on the PSI examination before you file, and the master preview says it in stronger words. The other half of that preview is blunter still: if you have not obtained this experience yet, do not apply.

Log planning and supervision hours from the day you get your journeyman card.

Route four is the working electrician's route and it's the only one that names the kind of hour it wants. Some of the 2,000 have to be planning and layout, and some have to be supervision earned while you hold the journeyman license. Nobody reconstructs that from memory years later, so record those hours separately as you go.

The registration freezes the day your master electrician leaves.

321 Colorado registrations were sitting in a status called Need Master Hire, Cannot Practice in the September 2026 data. The record still exists and the company cannot work until another master is attached to it. If your only master is thinking about leaving, treat it as a licensing event rather than an HR one and start looking before the last day.

Lose the designated agent and the registration cannot be reinstated.

The Board's wording is harder here than it is for contractors. If the agents are no longer employed with the photovoltaic installer, the registration is invalid and cannot be reinstated. A contractor registration in the same position waits in Need Master Hire for a replacement. This one doesn't wait, so work out now who your agent is and how you would replace one.

A certificate you were grandfathered into doesn't qualify.

The middle condition is the one that stops people. The Board wants the certificate gained through a state administered examination with a passing score, so a card issued by grandfathering or by any route other than a state exam sits outside the agreement. You also have to have held it for at least a year. If you're leaning on the NERA route instead, ask the Board to confirm your state in writing first.

Two live state documents name different code editions.

The Board's application previews all say the current NEC code in use in Colorado is the 2023 NEC, and the residential preview adds that a license tested on a different version isn't eligible. Against that, the rule filing under tracking number 2026-00171 put Colorado on the 2026 edition from July 15, 2026, and PSI has tested it since August 1. Both are live state documents. Call the Board on 303-894-7800 and get the answer in writing.

Four safety hours is the ceiling, not the plan.

The 24 hours have a floor and a ceiling inside them. At least four have to be in the National Electrical Code changes competency, and no more than four may be in safety. Book the code changes hours first, because that's the part with a minimum. This cycle they land on an edition Colorado only adopted in July 2026, so ask your provider which edition the course covers.

Holding a license doesn't exempt you from registering again.

A licensed residential wireman on a commercial job site has to be registered as an electrical apprentice and supervised by a journeyman or master. That is the mechanism for earning the 2,000 commercial hours the journeyman license asks for, and the filing sits with your employer. Ask them to do it on day one rather than after the hours are already worked.

Working on an expired license is its own offense.

The rule says practicing on an expired license past the grace period can be disciplined, and the fine schedule prices unlicensed work separately from whatever reinstatement costs you. The renewal window catches plenty of people: 4,438 residential wireman licenses were expired in the September 2026 data against 2,032 active. Stop working at the expiry date rather than when a letter turns up.
